Race-shifting and Ongoing Genocide
Good day podcast fans! This week in Scurvy’s Selection, we’re combining going deeper on an important decolonization topic we examined previously, with pure listening pleasure. In this featured episode of her popular podcast “Warrior Life,” Mi’kmaq professor & Doctor of Indigenous Laws Pam Palmater is joined for a spirited and entertaining discussion about racialized identity theft and white supremacy, by guest Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Doctor Kim TallBear; and anthropologist expert in Indigenous genealogy and DNA, among many other talents. That means we get to be flies on the wall, listening to two brilliant women break down pretendian nonsense and giving us a glimpse into how family works in many Indigenous cultures.
And let me tell you folx; this dynamic duo delivers. Together Palmater and TallBear dive into the history and harm of identity theft as an ongoing pattern of genocide. They point out how indescribably disgusting it is for colonizers, and in many cases the most extreme racist of colonizers, to suddenly pretend to be “scooped”, or “Eastern Metis” or to have “discovered” a single ancient ancestor that magically makes them “Native”. It turns out that not only do these folks lie about their heritage, and display histories of directing harm towards those communities they now claim membership in, but they also push out the real victims of settler colonialism; actual Indigenous people trying to recover what we’ve stolen from them!
Who knew tackling white supremacist cosplay could be so much fun? Check out this edition of Warrior Life on YouTube or by clicking the embedded podcast below:
