In many ways, the ongoing response, or lack of response in capitalist countries to the still-raging Covid 19 pandemic, serves as a proof of concept model for how that same capitalist order is responding to climate catastrophe in real time. This comparison is particularly effective because the global scale of the coronavirus pandemic makes it a crisis for more or less the entire capitalist class; much in the same way that climate collapse is, and will increasingly become, a crisis for that same ruling capitalist class as a whole. Given that our collective response to both has mirrored each other so far, we can use the much faster timescale of the pandemic, to predict future climate crisis reactions.

And let me tell you, that future looks grim. In the pandemic we can see that the absolute prioritization of maintaining capital accumulation above all else, has dictated an fundamentally fascist, eugenics-based response. We’ve sacrificed millions of people on the altar of capital, funded businesses to stay open instead of citizens to stay home, and the pandemic responses that did occur fundamentally ensured that this cost in real human lives was disproportionately paid by the traditional labor class victims of the capitalist order; the marginalized, and the poor. In the end, our entire society has been convinced to accept “living with” a pandemic that cannot be outlasted, and leaves its victims permanently diminished even if they do survive the experience.

Politically we’re presented with a form of masquerade politics about whether the crisis is even real; with one side claiming to champion the science, while their openly fascist opposition paints even minimal protection measures as a plot to usurp our freedoms. Fundamentally however, both sides are in agreement that grandma should probably die to keep the Dow ticker going up and up forever. Regardless of their political alignment, we’ve learned that our leaders are more than happy to openly lie to us about the danger and severity of the crisis, so billionaires can stack piles of money just a little bit higher, for just a little while longer.

Given these realities, and the genocide in slow motion that has represented the Pig Empire’s coronavirus response, why should anyone trust political leaders completely beholden to this same capitalist class, to respond to impending climate catastrophe any differently? The answer is, they really shouldn’t.
