Barbarism Starts at Home on Can’t You Read
Editor’s note: in a perfect world, Bookish Bits is a monthly literary writing column on Can’t You Read. Featuring both traditional book reviews, and expanded essays, this book blog encompasses all of my writing about the volumes in my extensive library.
A Chilled Chasm Between Good and Great
If I can say there was any upside to recovering from a long illness this past summer, it would definitely be that it gave me a chance to catch up on my reading. As such, I thought I might publish another book blog today over on Can’t You Read. This time I’m reviewing Spencer Ackerman’s Reign of Terror: How the 9/11 Era Destabilized America and Produced Trump; an intriguing book about the relationship between the War on Terror and American fascism, that somehow fails to identify Trumpism as fundamentally fascist. It’s masks off and mission accomplished time in this latest Bookish Bits review.
“The War on Terror’s fundamental reliance on American exceptionalism to justify its own existence, made its own prosecution a referendum on not just American empire, but on the national character itself. When combined with latent American chauvinism, nationalism, and white supremacy, the mixture became toxic. Failure to win the unwinnable war, and defeat the hated brown other not only discredited the leadership class, it called for revenge against those responsible for the humiliation.”
