No Justice, No Peace on Can’t You Read
Editor’s note: this post is part of the Recommended Reading series on my Can’t You Read blog; an ongoing and evolving feature that combines an easy to swipe info-graphic, a short journal, and a link to an important related discussion I’d like to share with readers.
Police Reform is a Dead End Even After Chauvin
In the wake of the shocking (and yet richly deserved) guilty verdicts in the Derek Chauvin trial, many mainstream liberals are once again pushing the doomed cause of police reform. In this fully-sourced, medium-length essay, I talk about why the Democratic Party establishment’s commitment to capitalist predation guarantees that strategy will fail; not only because police reform already failed George Floyd specifically, but also because the fight against violent murderpigs isn’t about race or class, but rather race and class. Giving fascist police officers more money for training isn’t the answer – defunding and or abolishing the police is.
Finally we close with a link to a frightening, and yet wholly plausible analysis article by the University of Alberta’s Temitope Oriola that explains why America might collectively be running out of time to get the answer right.
“Look; you don’t get rid of fascist murderpigs and white supremacists in law enforcement by throwing more money at nazi cops. Joe Biden can summon up all the pretty words he likes, but you can’t address the racialized nature of police violence without fundamentally altering either the racialized nature of inequality in American life, or the very purpose of policing in our society; and he’s sure as shit not talking about doing any of that at all. Thus, no matter how surprised and hopeful I am after the Chauvin guilty verdicts, that sense of positivity is ultimately tempered by the realization that “nothing will fundamentally change” – and that includes cracker thug pigs executing unarmed Black men on camera.”
