Link: They All Fall Down – New Essay

Editor’s note: after smashing (but perhaps not breaking) my toe yesterday I had to cut my writing session a little short. As such today’s link is a slightly shorter essay on my literature-focused image blog at “Can’t You Read” in which we examine Tim Weiner’s 2007 prize-winning history of the CIA, Legacy of Ashes and the nature of propaganda in history books.

The simple truth is that Legacy of Ashes is a wonderful catalogue of American intelligence abuses over the past seventy years, that nevertheless seeks to blame every single one of them on bad apple individual actors, the legacy of Allen Dulles, or unclear orders from career politicians. What gives? Is this book a limited hangout or are there structural reasons why Weiner would criticize the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency primarily to try and save it?
