No Illusions (About How Bad It Is)
Editor’s note: as part of an ongoing project to turn ninaillingworth.com into a central hub for all of my writing (due to ongoing censorship of my work by billion dollar tech companies,) I’m spending the next little while gradually cross-posting older material from other platforms; my apologies for any potentially unwanted email notifications.
This article is also part of the “Leftist Theory” collection here on ninaillingworth.com.
This Is Already the Dystopia You Fear
Roughly once every six to ten months, the utterly mind-numbing horror of understanding the true inhuman monstrosity of globalized, Americanized capitalism, leads me to write an emotional journal piece in which I try to convey the sense of falsehood, rottenness and sheer murderous intent of the political-economic order we live under. Although on some conceptual level most folks understand that the world we live in, and the results of the ideologies we live under, are not tragic accidents of unchecked progress, but rather the desired result of capitalist rule; a situation dependent on a populace willing to literally “live lies.” On the other hand, the foundations of this global slaughterhouse are unquestionably secured by our collective, tacit agreement to never even consider the obvious reality that these “tragic outcomes” are in fact deliberate; in other words, rich people are absolutely killing you (and the entire planet) for money.
I should also note here that these essays are, collectively, by no means my favorite pieces, but they are extremely popular with my readers and I’d be remiss to leave this early prototype of the form, hidden away on my Patreon Blog.
“This is because when you really drill down and examine the evidence, you quickly discover that all of these terrible accusations are in fact true in an absolutely literal sense. Homelessness kills people, tears families apart and destroys millions of lives every year. There is nothing metaphorical about the growing number of “tent cities” in or near every major urban community in the United States. There is a very real human cost involved with the extraction of rents in our society and that cost is paid not only in cash, but also in psychological anguish, biological deterioration and the sociological impact of countless bright futures snuffed out by the twin tyrannies of wage slavery and property speculation – the list goes on and on, I’m really barely scratching the surface here.”
