Assata is Innocent & the Myth of Moderate Liberal Tolerance
Editor’s note: as part of a project to turn ninaillingworth.com into a central hub for all of my writing (in response to ongoing censorship of my work by big money tech companies,) I’m spending this month cross-posting older material from other platforms on to my main site. Unfortunately after wasting hours looking into it, I’ve discovered that I can’t actually turn off notification emails so please bear with me if this puts an unwanted notification in your inbox; at some point I’ll run out of back-dated article links to post, I assure you.
Please note that this blog-ish book review post originally appeared on January 6th, 2019, over on my image blog at Can’t You Read.
What Exactly Are Liberals “Tolerating” Anyway?
If I’m being completely honest here, I originally wrote this longer blog post as an excuse to share Assata Shakur’s excellent and insightful quote about the true nature of liberalism and liberal attitudes towards the struggle of the marginalized against (highly lucrative forms of) oppression. In that vein, I must admit that it’s not much of a book review so much as a combination defense of Shakur, who at this point its entirely fair to say was framed as part of Hoover’s COINTEL program, and an expanded discussion about how both Assata, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, had essentially come to the same conclusion about white, moderate liberals from two entirely different perspectives of Black struggle in America. As any of you who just survived two primaries contesting against liberal civility politics combined with outright smears, gaslighting and open bigotry will be unsurprised to learn, both activists ultimately took a rather dim view of “liberal tolerance” and those who purport to practice it.
