Digital Imperialism & Yasha Levine’s Surveillance Valley CYR
Editor’s note: as part of a massive project to turn ninaillingworth.com into a central hub for all of my writing (and at least partially in response to ongoing censorship of my work by billion dollar tech companies,) I’m spending parts of this month cross-posting older material from other platforms. I’m trying to spread these posts out so I don’t flood your inbox with notices but after wasting hours looking into it, I’ve discovered that I can’t actually turn off notification emails. Please bear with me folks.
Please note that this blog-ish book review post originally appeared on January 4th, 2019, over on my image blog at Can’t You Read.
Surveillance Valley & Internet Freedom on Can’t You Read
Of course, the internet is spying on you; we all know that don’t we? Living in a post-Snowden Leaks world, it’s hardly a shocking revelation for modern citizens of the Pig Empire to hear that literally everything they do online is recorded by someone; even if it’s “only” corporations trying to sell us something. But what does all of that really mean; and is there a larger plan than selling Dockers at work here? What if the internet’s business model is itself, surveillance? Even worse; what if the entire commercial internet is actually just a cover for military and state level surveillance by some of the most twisted actors in the Pig Empire? Would we still then happily sign our lives away to be “all watched over by machines of loving grace?” These are just some of the questions author and noted online dissident Yasha Levine seeks to answer in his groundbreaking and far-too-underappreciate work “Surveillance Valley: The Secret Military History of the Internet.”
